What if there was a way to create better collaboration at work? A simple recipe for increased understanding and improved communication. Good news, there is! Increased knowledge about the brain will create a better working climate.
“Reaching the next level of greatness depends on the quality of our corporate culture,
which depends on the quality of our relationships,
which depends on the quality of our conversations ..
Everything happens through conversation! ”
- Judith E. Glaser -
When the brain feels threatened, we underperform
When employees are exposed to someone "controlling them dictatorially", receiving news without explanation or withholding information, cortisol levels in the brain are raised. A lot of cortisol makes the body go up in circles, creates a feeling of threat and causes stress. The same thing happens with criticism and feelings of exclusion, limitation and judgment.
The world feels threatening in situations of insecurity. Threats make us back down and we feel that we need to protect ourselves. Brain researchers know that threats can cause parts of the brain to be kidnapped. The threat network in our brain makes us fight, flee or freeze and underachievement at work becomes a fact.
The basis for better cooperation is knowledge of the brain
On the opposite side of threats and cortisol is oxytocin, which among other things creates the feeling of security and well-being, emotions that are fundamental for good cooperation and successful performance. Oxytocin is evoked by inclusion, appreciation, sharing and discovery, broadened views, development and, not least, by celebrating success!
If the corporate culture feels safe and positive, the brain produces oxytocin and dopamine. These are hormones that help us relax, make us feel open to others and create a sense of trust. Thanks to these hormones, we gain access to the frontal part of the brain, the part of the brain that controls the ability to balance, successful decision-making and innovation at a high level. Focusing on brain functions is thus the way to better collaboration!
How do you increase your cooperation?
Now that you have knowledge of brain functions, it's time to start acting. The key to creating a better corporate culture and increasing collaboration is about DIALOGUE. Create space for the entire organization to actively talk about what the following means to you and which actions create feelings of:
• Transparency
• Relationship building
• Understanding
• A common success vision
• Truth
• Empathy
Shortly said
Criticism, dictating, withholding, limiting, judging, excluding and certainly knowing creates threats and underachievement.
