STARS motivates the team to peak performance

 

Motivating your team to excellent performance can be a challenge, but with basic knowledge about the brain it becomes easier. David Rock at the NeuroLeadership Institute believes that if you learn to understand what all people need at a basic level, the team will be more successful, regardless of what you want to achieve. According to David SCARF, the basic needs of our brains are called

Factors that govern motivation:

Status
Status is an incredibly sensitive factor with a very strong connection to feedback which is a popular activity in today's working life. But beware, there is a risk here - feedback can be perceived as a danger and the reaction can be that the employee's sense of status decreases. David's first tip: Inspire employees to give feedback to themselves to begin with. Ask the person to ask questions about themselves and opportunities for development. As a result, the person increases their own self-awareness and status instead!

Clarity
Security is one of the states the brain likes best and it always tries to predict what will happen. David's other tips: Inform, inform and inform. And if you have no information - say so and tell us what date you will return to in the matter.

Autonomy
Control and the feeling of being able to influence one's own situation removes stress. David's third tip: Present opportunities to influence and choose in order to create a feeling of being able to influence and control.

Relation
The brain is programmed to see people we do not know as a threat. David's fourth tip for teams and organizations: Make sure to create common areas and opportunities to get to know each other.

Game Rules
The last factor in STARS is very crucial for feelings of reward and thereby maximizing commitment. David's fifth tip: Leaders need to be clear that they are striving for justice, and to create a clear obviousness around it. And as we on Yesbox says: "Justice does not mean everyone gets the same, justice means that everyone gets what they need with clear rules of the game."

 

Motivating teams using the SCARF model (STARS)

How is it to work with someone who shows how good you are and increases your status?
Which is clear with expectations but allows you to make decisions?
Who shows that they trust you and have a genuine interest in you?
And who treats you fairly and who you trust is fair to others?

To sum up: to understand and actively use the SCARF model maximizes the reward in the brain, empowers us to motivate ourselves and others, makes us smarter, more committed, and therefore more productive.
