Sick leave due to mental health at work currently costs Swedish society over SEK 62 billion every yearBehind the numbers are people – employees and managers – who can no longer cope, and organizations that are losing both pace and competence.

But it can be prevented.

Almost half of all sick leave is related to mental health

According to the latest figures from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, mental health diagnoses account for 48% of all ongoing illnesses. This is mainly about stress, exhaustion, depression and anxiety. At the same time, we see a particularly worrying increase among certain groups:

  • Bland women 18–24 years old now get over 20% care for mental health every year.
  • Stress-related sick leave is on it highest level ever, and is increasing especially among women in the middle of working life.
  • Mothers aged 30–39 are identified as a group with the fastest increasing sick leave.

This is not something temporary. Research clearly shows that the work environment, treatment and clarity in everyday life affect how we feel – and how long we can last.

A fruit basket and a gym membership aren't enough

Many organizations are already investing in wellness and exercise. That's good. But it's not always enough. A sustainable work environment also requires that we talking about what you feel, listens to early signals, and builds trust in teams.

Taking the mental health work environment seriously is about creating space for:

  • Reflection and meaningful conversations
  • Clarity about roles and expectations
  • Structure for monitoring, adjusting and learning
